Watson Lake, Yukon
The Town of Watson Lake owes its existence to two major factors: the construction of a military airport in 1941 and the construction of the Alaska Highway in 1942. It is located in the southeastern Yukon. As the ”Gateway to the Yukon” Watson Lake is situated at kilometer 1016.8 on the Alaska highway at its junction with the Campbell Highway, making it the first community north of 60th parallel as you enter the Yukon
It is home to about 2000 people. It has 2 schools, Johnson Elementary and Watson lake Secondary School
Johnson Elementary School
The school is focused on the very important goal of ensuring that “A Balanced Literacy Approach”, in supporting student success in reading, writing, listening and speaking, is successfully implemented school wide.
There are 132 students enrolled for the 2016/17 school year in K to Grade 7.

Johnson Elementary’s School Food Program
The school operates a breakfast and lunch program. The funding that the school receives from Yukon Food for Learning Association is provided by Yukon Health and Social Services and Breakfast Club of Canada.
About 50 students have breakfast every morning and on average 10 students are provided with lunch.
In addition to the direct funding that the school receives from YFFLA, the school is assisted by the local grocery store and the local First Nation. Watson Lake Super A provides the school with a 10% discount on all regular priced merchandise. The Liard First Nation and the Ganhada Management Group has provided financial support for many activities and events hosted by the school.
The school has had parents that have helped and the program would not run without the assistance of school staff.
Watson Lake Secondary School
Watson Lake Secondary School is a place of opportunity for all, where each and every one of our students has the opportunity to make the very most of his or her talents.
We strive to provide excellent academic instruction at all levels of ability, as well as a rich variety of co-curricular and extracurricular activities from sports teams to student council. We are also always on the lookout for opportunities outside the school and have sent WLSS students all over the territory and the country for sports activities, leadership conferences and national competitions including Skills Canada. Our goal is for all of our students to find success in a way that is meaningful to their career plan. There are 84 students enrolled for the 2016/17 school year in Grade 8 to 12.

Watson Lake Secondary’s School Food Program
The school operates a breakfast program and a hot lunch program that is available free of charge to all students. The funding that the school receives from Yukon Food for Learning Association is provided by Yukon Health and Social Services and Breakfast Club of Canada.
About 35 to 40 students have breakfast every morning and on average 55 students take advantage of the hot lunch.
In addition to the direct funding that the school receives from YFFLA, the school is assisted by the community. The school has received financial assistance from the Watson Lake Super A, the Town of Watson Lake, Watson Lake School Council, the Liard First Nation and the Kaska Dena Council.
